Ayubu through the looking glass

MTCEA member Abudu is not well educated but has a heart of gold. However he has taken to the art and importance of making tea like a true scholar and I count him as a friend.

How many children do you have, Abudu?
5, ages 12 to 23.
What do they do?
The eldest is a girl, she stays at home and does nothing. She did one term at university but I didn’t have enough of this (rubs his fingers together), so she had to leave.
What was she learning? Secretarial studies and IT.
Oh, she will do well Abudu, at something important (what can you say?)
Later he comes over to me and says Bwana Sim, I need help, I can’t read.
Oh, would you like to?
Oh yes, I can’t see the words.
Ah, you can read but you can’t read!
Yes!! Laughter!  He hands me a faded scrap of paper with some sort of official stamp at the top, which says, left 2.00, right 2.00. He’s seen me wearing reading glasses so I go and get them. He holds the papers he’s been trying in complete vain to decipher and tries them on. He’s never tried glasses before. Through the lenses I see tears in his eyes. You can see Abudu wearing his first pair of specs on my post.

Jake is sending me some $2 shop 2.00 specs….. A little goes so far.

    Hi Simon
Each day I look forward to hearing what you have been up to. You are such a funny and interesting writer you need to write a book!! What an experience!! You seem to have settled in pretty well. I would love to send a parcel to you – have got magazines, my old glasses (if of any use) and would love to buy some things that would make a difference to your friends. Please let me know. Cheers Christine J
